hello blog.
long time no type.
Been busy/overwhelmed with real life.
It's 2am tuesday morning, and tomorrow the plumber will come to fix the leaky garden tap. Because my kiwi cannot get it to turn off fully after he cleaned the roofs/gutters last Thursday.
We also will be expecting a cable guy to come disconnect some tv channels, we're going to downgrade to the absolute minimum package - 13 channels, to save money.
Then we also will be going to the bank to cash a paycheque, and pull $ out of my POSB account to deposit into my local checking account.
And also going to buy some toys for my brother, and a suitcase big enough to fit the toy. Rock Band 2 Bass Fender Guitar. Umm yeah, okay......
Next Tuesday morning, we will be at the airport. Lining up here, queueing up there. Taking off our shoes, get scanned, et cetera. Going via United Airlines through chicago and hongkong to arrive in singapore. Hopefully no horrendous delays which will lead to staying overnight somewhere. 30 hours of total flight and transit time is enough.
I can't wait to get to Singapore again. And with Kiwi this time. But I have worries. I worry that even if the friend who looks after our fur-kids is a wonderful person, the kids would get stressed and worried and Brownie would lose his fur like earlier this year.
I worry what would happen to the house since we're away for almost 2 months. Yes, we have a monitoring system, and we plan to leave housekeys (in case of emergency) with Kiwi's friend, you never know what might happen.

random events in the past two weeks
last wednesday - there was another spay/neuter event at the shelter. I helped out. I also had someone help take over the care of the 4 dumpster kittens since life was so busy for myself and kiwi
last friday - we went to the dentist. he had his thing, and i had some oral surgery. cutting open the gums to clean underneath, hopefully this will stop the pus/blood from continuing.
last saturday - kiwi's first official day working alone, although we've been busy prepping for it, with his on-the-job training and my paperwork + online research + et cetera; and us going shopping for tools.
this week, the car's heater broke down again. i took it in to carmax again. it was within the 6 month repair warranty so it didn't cost anything to have it looked at. and since it was a recurring problem, even though the part replaced was not covered, they took care of the cost as well. i'm super duper glad that i'd decided to purchase the extended warranty initially. i'll be very sad when the warranty runs out in may 2009.
going back to the dentist later this morning to get the stitches out. i'll be so glad when that happens. maybe i can finally crunch down on the honey crisp apples i've been smelling all week long, driving me nuts. i'm almost sick of bananas.

Dumpster Kittens
I have them.
4 of them, actually.
Kiwi found 4 kittens in the dumpster at work on monday. He brought them home to me. They were super feral, the hiding/crouching hissing/spitting/growling kind. But kittens are always cute.
The shelter I volunteer at will help me with them. If I get them tamed down, they can be put up for adoption. If they're not tamed, I'll keep them til they're big enough for surgery, and the shelter can help me fix them, eartip them and release them back into the wild.
I try to cuddle each kitten at least 45 mins at a time. But when I'm closed up in the computer/kitten room, Brownie gets all upset and wail-y. Very stressful for both of us.

Clingy Kitties
Well, just one clingy cat in particular - Brownie. He does not do well with separation from me. Long separations make him stressed out and start losing fur. Since I was away for 3 days during the convention, he has been super duper clingy. He wakes me up and sticks to me all day, meowing, getting underfoot.
Today, I stepped on him twice because I was in the kitchen going back and forth cleaning the stove. Silly cat does not know to stay a few feet away.
It also does not help that Kiwi brought home 4 kittens on monday (which he found in the dumpster at work) so I'm trying to spend some time with each kitten to tame them down. They're deathly afraid of everything and hiss and growl. So Brownie gets jealous about that too.
When I go to the basement laundry room and stay in there for about 5 minutes, I will hear such wailing, like it's the end of the world, like the washing machine has eaten me up or something.
Bebe cat is clingy with Kiwi. He's always underfoot when Kiwi is trying to get ready for work in the morning, leading to squished kitty foot or something like that. And 3am in the morning is an excellent time to go breath in Kiwi's hair and meow for attention.
And when Kiwi comes home in the evening, he takes off his work shirt, and then his white undershirt, and lays them out flat on the floor. Then Princella and Brownie will flomph onto the shirts, grab and kick the clothing, and even rub their faces all over his stinky shirt. Kinda like catnip. EW.
I'd actually leave the clothing on the floor until the next day, so throughout the night, I'd see one or the other kitty sitting on the t-shirt. WHY!
UGH.
It's certainly not catnip to me. I'd rather he jump straight into the shower, but I will tolerate some stinky hugs just because I love him and don't want Kiwi to feel too rejected.

Buckeye Game Fest
Thursday
Reached there slightly before noon.
Registered and got our free games: Masons & Guatemala Cafe.
Kiwi and I played various games:
Railroad Tycoon Europe with Ian, Alan and Teague
Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers by ourselves
Carcassonne with River expansion with Wendy and Carol
Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers with Wendy and Carol.
Friday
Had a late breakfast at McDonalds
Reached there about 11 am.
Kiwi bought a whole bunch of games, totalling about $250.
Next we played:
Carcassonne New World with Wendy, Carol, and Dan.
Volcano with Wendy and Dan.
Went to check into the room, then we bought some groceries to fill the room fridge. Originally I had thought that we would have to eat out for every meal while at the convention, but since the fridge was a decent size, we could eat from the fridge and the microwave. Goody! Can save some money that way.
After dinner, we played more games.
Carcassonne New World with Carol
Catan 3rd Edition with event cards with Seth and Niv.
Fluxx (Jeff's deck) with Carol, Wendy, Allison and Niv.
Fluxx regular with Wendy, Allison, Niv and Seth.
Saturday morning, we woke up pretty early, around 7.30am. Got breakfast, and walked over to go play games. Kiwi spent the first part of the morning registering for the auction and looking through the items for auction. I played Carcassonne The Castle with a young man named Daniel (I think his name is Daniel, not too sure, can't remember).
Then the auction started about 10am, and lasted for about 3 hours. For $67, we got Risk, Skipbo, Nature Trail, Settlers of Catan Card Game, Starship Catan, Mancala, Pirates of the Caribbean Monopoly, Spammers, Munchkin, Munchkin Fu, Munchkin Blender, and Carcassonne Mini Expansion.
After lunch, we played a few games:
Carcassonne New World with Mike and Tracy
Settlers of Catan with Card Expansion with Carol
Then we had a small dinner back in the hotel room with Carol and Wendy and Nick.
Then it was more games again:
Alhambra the Gardens with Nick and Michelle
Ticket to Ride with Nick
Went back to the hotel to shower, then even more games!
Runes(myself only) with Wendy and Alan
Tichu with Wendy and Alan
Upwords(myself only) with Carol, Jeff, and Nick
Tichu(Kiwi only) with Wendy, Alan and someone Kiwi didn't know.
And that ended our Saturday at Sunday 3am.
Sunday
We slept in until about 10am.
Hurried up and packed up to check out at 11am.
Played a few games before the con closed up at 5pm.
Killer Bunnies Starter deck with Wendy
Tichu with Wendy and Jeff. My first tichu !!
Treehouse with Wendy and Jeff
Volcano with Jeff
If Wishes Were Fishes with Jeff.
Reached home about 6pm, fixed dinner, threw some clothing into the washer, put away most of our stuff, and fell asleep in front of the TV.
I really enjoyed myself for this extended weekend for several reasons. I got to hang out with Kiwi for longer than a weekend (and he didn't sleep much so more hours for us together). Played lots of games with people we know and people we got to know. Learned a few new games. All around fun! Been a nice escape from the recent stress we both have been experiencing (from change, not our relationship)
But I'm also glad it's over and I'm back to real life. Because even though these games are really fun, it takes ALOT of mental energy. And it's good for some peace and quiet again. I like peace and quiet and being alone in the house sometimes. Plus I get to have the cats around us as usual. I worried about the fur-kids when we were away.
------
During the con, Kiwi surprised me by pulling out a wad of money (ok, just $300) and said this was part of his savings, and that we will buy games from the retailer at the convention. Because it's so hard to shop for me and surprise me, and there are games he knows that I like, so this will be the gift for US. OK then!
So he bought:
Carcassonne
Carcassonne Inns and Cathedrals
Carcassonne Traders and Builders
Carcassonne The Tower
Carcassonne Abbey and Mayor
Carcassonne Princess and Dragon
Carcassonne King and Scout
Carcassonne River 2
Carcassonne The Count
Carcassonne The Castle
Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers
Carcassonne New World
Settlers of Catan 4th Edition
Settlers of Catan 4th Edition Seafarers expanion
Settlers of Catan 4th Edition Cities and Knights expansion
Settlers of Catan Event cards
Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries

The Sims
Started playing the Sims again last week. As usual, I think I spend more time designing houses than messing around with the characters. I made my 2 families fabulously rich so no one would have to work.
This time, I actually had all 7 expansions. I'm gonna have to take some time exploring all the new options.
FUN!

Weekend Summary
Friday, after Kiwi came home from work, we went to eat at a chinese buffet. I can never remember chinese restaurant names, I just refer to it by location. This one was near Hudson and High, opposite Giant Eagle.
As usual, I loaded up on their coconut shrimp. YUM!
Then we went to CABS, and played 3 games with each other.
Carcasonne The City
Ticket to Ride
Ticket to Ride Switzerland.
*****
Saturday was a slow day for me. Kiwi had to go to work to do their annual inventory, whilst I fixed Bak Kut Teh at home with a rack of spare ribs.
We had that for dinner. He enjoyed it very much. Since it was done in the crockpot for several hours, the meat was fallling off the bone. And white cartilage(?) had turned translucent and could be eaten like jelly. Kiwi even bit up some of the bones and ate the marrow.
*****
Sunday, we went out and ran errands, did some shopping for house stuff and groceries. Had lunch at Gyro Express on Morse road. Yummy as usual, although the air conditioner there was not working.
Dinner was leftovers from fridge.
We also played Carcassonne Princess and Dragon online. We finally figured out (at the end of the game) how the new expansion worked. Although it seemed a little buggy, the game would always give me 1 point whenever Kiwi took his turn. Not sure what's going on.

Honeycrisp Apples
I just bought my first honeycrisp apples of the year!!! WHEEEE!!!
I got them from Giant Eagle. I thought I'd have to make Kiwi get up some early Saturday morning to go the farmer's markets to see if I can get any this year. Or maybe Whole Foods Market. But imagine my surprise when I can find it at a regular grocery store.
Well, maybe Giant Eagle has it regularly. I wouldn't know, because we don't shop there often because the groceries are pricier than Kroger or Meijer. I was there to look for something specific. Lucky me!
I just ate my first Honeycrisp. It still had that great light crunch. But it's not as sweet as I remembered. It's less tart than a Granny Smith though. I think I shall have caramel dip with my next Honeycrisp.

Windstorm 2008
I woke up in the middle of the wind storm.
The power was going on and off and on and off.
The thing that actually got me out of bed was the awful beeping of the UPS in the computer room.
Then I walked around the house looking for Kiwi, but I couldn't find him. I got worried when I realised that his sleeping clothes were left on the floor, and his jeans were gone. Where could he have gone! Without telling me! In bad weather!!
I was pretty grumpy, until I found him outside, sitting on the porch swing. That was mildly dangerous, I thought, because of all the flying debris and et cetera.
We ended up being really really really lucky because we did not have any property damage. Thank goodness I had paid to get all the trees on our property cut down earlier this year. Our electricity was out for about 27 hours. We did not lose any food because we kept the freezers (top mount and chest) closed.
We had just gone out the previous day to buy batteries (for personal and his work) so we had plenty of batteries to power a fan (for white noise while sleeping) and the handcrank radio, and flashlights. Oh plus we had tons of candles. I had slept pretty soundly (for my standards anyway) and actually felt cold if I had a body part left outside the blanket. But poor Kiwi was complaining he was overheating and the only relief was a random breeze coming from the windows.
I spent all Monday morning sitting outside on the porch swing listening to the radio and watching all the neighbourhood activity. The neighbour on our left had a largish (10 inches in diameter) branch fall off his front tree. I had to listen to him tell me that about 4 times. The neighbours 2 doors on the right had their entire family (I'm guessing its the entire family) chopping up THEIR fallen branch..
The neighbour directly across from us had their porch swing broken when it got blown off 6 feet away. Interesting to watch all the neighbourhood kids help carry the broken parts into the backyard while the woman actually living in the house only moved the car so the kids could get past it. I thought that was pretty lazy, but I don't know her and she might have a back problem or something.
The back alley has some fallen branches as well. Luckily the exit closer to our garage is clear, although some inconsiderate shit decided to dump some branches just about right in front of our garage.
Poeple! You have fallen branches, you cut it up, sweep it, bag it. Toss it, or burn it. Something. Don't drag it into your backyard and dump it over the fence like you do your old tires and mattresses and furniture and television sets. Bah.

Cheesecake Factory
Kiwi and I went to the new Cheesecake Factory at Polaris on Saturday. It was around 5.20pm when we got there. Waited for about 10 minutes for a seat.
I ordered the Factory Appetizer Sampler, intending to share it with Kiwi, and no entree for myself. I made the specific request to not to include any/all cilantro in the dishes, because Kiwi was very sensitive to it. Kiwi ordered a chicken dish.
We waited, and waited and waited.
The table next to us (3 girls) got their appetizer plate. Then they got their entrees. Then they had their plates taken away to be boxed up. We were still waiting for our food. I made a comment to Kiwi that if I had to wait 10 more minutes, we'd just walk out.
5 minutes later, the food arrived. I pointed at the shrimp spring rolls and said, "that looks like cilantro." The server said, "Oh no, that's just scallions."
So I picked off a tiny cut up leave, handed it to Kiwi, and asked him to taste it. He put it in his mouth and spit it out immediately. It was cilantro. So the server took most of the appetizers off the table to bring it to the kitchen.
Kiwi was eating his meal, and I was cooling my heels and getting hungrier and crankier. Later the manager came, and said, "I'm going to comp you this dish. Most of it is pre-prepared, and there's no way to take the cilantro out. But I'm going to bring the calamari and other stuff that does not have cilantro for you."
We expressed to her that the sampler was for sharing. That I'd have no problem with cilantro, only Kiwi. And if it was pointed out to him which dishes have the herb, he'd simply leave that alone. But we'd like to have the meal.
So ok, we waited another 10 minutes for the appetizers to come out again. By then I was too hungry, I got nauseous and could not eat much anymore. So we had the server box up all the food after Kiwi was done with his meal.
He brings the boxes to us, plus the bill. It did not look right. We were charged for 1 entree, 2 appetizer samplers and had 1 sampler taken off. Is this the meaning of "we'll comp the appetizers?" I don't think this is the meaning of a complimentary dish.
I don't this so. If you were to take my appetizers from me in the first round, I'd surely expect not to pay for it then. So Kiwi went to speak to the manager about it, and got the other appetizer deducted off the bill. We'd only have to pay for the entree.
We discussed about how much of a tip we'd leave. Kiwi said if he were generous, only 10%. And we are normally generous tippers at full service restaurants. If it's good service, it's about 20%.
I had my wallet out, waiting for the server to take my credit card. Kiwi had already picked up all the bags of food, looking like he was ready to go.
I made a comment to Kiwi to be careful and not spill the sauces. So we open up all the boxes to check. No dipping sauces, no salsa, no guacamole, on sour cream, and worst of all, one of the appetizers were missing - the spinach/artichoke dip with chips.
We expressed this to the server. He said, "Oh, I had someone in the kitchen box this up for me. Let me fix this." He brings another bag of stuff after 5 minutes.
Okay, the sauces are there now. So what of the spinach dip?
By now, the credit card was already swiped. I was too aggravated and Kiwi didn't want to bother the manager anymore. We did not leave a monetary tip. However, we wrote on the back of the slip the reasons why he was not getting a tip.
1.Service too slow, example of table next to us.
2.Cilantro in dish
3.Trying to say cilantro is scallions.
4.No spinach/artichoke dip after 2 tries.
This place left me with a bad taste in my mouth. We went at a reasonable time, before rush hour. No reason to be kept waiting for so long for service/food. And just generally poor server skills/training.

BBQ
Haven't had a BBQ in the backyard in several months. Been busy with CABS and whatnot, not enough time/energy to spend on prepping and cooking the food slowly.
However, last week during a weekday I had the car so I did get some grocery shopping done. I picked 2 cornish hens and 6 large portabellas at aldis and some chicken wings and johnsonville brats at kroger. Marinated the wings, defrosted the hens, and waited for sunday.
A simple mixture of salt, black pepper, and olive oil was smeared onto the mushrooms and the hens. Threw the wings onto the grill, plus mushrooms, and a big slab of beef (dry rub of citrus seasoning). That was dinner for us.
Whenever I did BBQ, I'd always feel that there should be something done with the rest of the charcoal that would be left greyish but still putting out alot of heat. Waste of energy and whatnot. So I wanted to try to make use of the dying coals.
New method of cooking (for me) was indirect heat. Did that for the hens and brats. The thermometer on the cover of our grill said it did reach a temp of 300F. Later on when I went to check on it, it had dropped down to about 250F.
But an hour's worth of grilling (using the residual heat of the coals) turned out great for the meats. No burning, just a crispiness.
YUMYUMYUM chicken skin!!

Busy Friday - Dentist/CABS
Wokeup somewhat early, we had a morning AND afternoon appointment at OSU College of Dentistry.
I had a morning consult with a periodontist, Kiwi had a filling done in the afternoon, I had some deep cleaning done at the same time.
After that, we went to CABS.
Played:
Underground
Candamir
Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers
Settlers of Catan with Ryan, Carlo, and 2 other people (I forget their name)
Kiwi confessed that he felt rather cranky at certain points in the evening. When the games weren't going too well for it. And he felt rather disturbed by feeling that way, because it wasn't good gamesmanship.
HAH! I feel that way alot. Especially when the dice rolls are FUCKING LOUSY and I'm not getting what I need to progress. I think it's ok to feel cranky. As long as there's no yelling or throwing of tantrum.
We brought home two games to play. We'll see how that goes later.

Jacqueline Franks' Nightwalker Series
Finished all 5 current books in the series. I liked them. The storyline, and the drama, and the interaction between all the characters in the books. However, I am not so fond of the sex scenes. They're simply not that hot. Or have I become so jaded?
Hahaha, anyway, when sex scenes come along, I just kinda glaze over and skip a few pages.
I'll have to remember in a few more years to read the next books that the writer should have produced by then.

Gaming At Home
Just Kiwi and I today.
We played the 2 games we'd borrowed from CABS

Dentist Visit
Today, Kiwi and I went to the student dental clinic at OSU. We spent about 3 hours there being seen, a little extra time added for just waiting.
It was uncomfortable, but necessary, I assume. Personally, I have periodontal disease. My perio consult (together with Kiwi's) will be scheduled on September 5, Friday in the morning. Then we will both see our separate student dentist in the afternoon. It's really nice that they try to schedule us together.
I have very little plaque/tartar. Dentist says the brushing really shows. And just flossing once a day is enough as well.
Kiwi needs periodontal work, and 2 fillings, and 2 crowns. The crowns are estimated to cost $450 each. DEAR GOD! The fillings are manageable - cheaper than Columbus Public Health anyway.

Cabs Weekend
On Friday, Kiwi and I picked up our car from CarMax in the evening, had dinner, and then went to the CABS meeting.
We had fun, played different games:-
Betrayal at House on the Hill - with Vincent, Michael, Jessie and Matt
Duck Duck Go - with Michael, Wendy, Nick, and someone else I can't remember off-hand
Xanth - with Wendy and Nick
We borrowed two games - Guatemala Cafe and PowerGrid, neither of which we had time for up til now.
On Sunday, Michael came over to our house and played 3 games of Catan. THREE!! It's a new game to him and he always wanted to try it and I'm glad we taught it to him. It's definitely more enjoyable playing with more than just 2 people, and extremely enjoyable playing with the right group of people.

Cost of vehicle insurance expected to rise
Kiwi had a minor accident with the van today. He was at the library parking lot, and when he pulled out of his spot, he scraped against a car.
He said yes, he did hit it, but says no, it's not his fault because the car was not properly parked.
And yes, he took photos. The other car was very poorly parked. Its tires were covering the yellow line that marks out the parking spaces.
Well, I dunno, but whatever happens, I expect our insurance premiums to go up. Just a few weeks ago, I was thinking (not out loud, because that would jinx it), that come June 2009, our 3 year driving record would be accident free again and MAYBE our insurance premium would go down. HAH.

no more NTB, no more Budget Rental
Last Saturday, I took the car to NTB. For a routine oil change, and I also wanted the alignment to be adjusted because Kiwi said it was pulling a little to the left.
So I left it there while Kiwi and I ran some errands. An hour later, we get a message that a whole bunch of stuff with my car is all fucked up, it needs to be fixed to be able to fix the alignment.
I copied down the list of 5 items, and got a quote of about $2100. If we couldn't afford that, the minimum we needed to do was about $800.
I thought about it for awhile, and just took the car home. On Tuesday, I took the car to CarMax because when I purchased the car from them in May 2006, I had also purchased a 3 year warranty. So after waiting for 2 hours there, I was told that only 1 item out of the list needed to be done. And it would be covered by my warranty, I only need to pay my $50 deductible.
I'm driving a rental right now (warranty covers a $25.00/day rental vehicle). CarMax used to work with Speedy, or was it Thrifty Car Rental, on Morse Road at the Dennis dealership. The process there was fast and painless.
This time however, it was Budget. They wanted my credit card to hold $100 on it. And I would have to pay a fuel surcharge of $14.00. Unless I travelled less than 75 miles AND filled up the tank and showed a receipt for it. No such thing as peeking at the fuel meter and be good to go.
*eye roll*
Ridiculous money grubbing policies. However, I have to say that the employees are extremely polite. Very good personal customer service. Just lousy company policies. No reason to be nasty to people for things that they did not dictate.
However, I did call to CarMax and expressed my opinion that I did not like Budget, I preferred the previous rental company. Maybe if enough people complained, they would switch back. MAYBE.

Akai Hana
Last night, we went out for dinner. Just because. No special occasion.
We went to this Japanese restaurant near Kenny/Henderson that was pretty pricey (for our standards) but I knew that we would enjoy the food. And sure enough, we did.
We had bulgogi, shrimp tempura rolls, spicy scallop rolls, soft shell crab tempura, squid legs tempura, shiitake tempura, agedashi tofu, grilled shishamo, rice, miso soup, and kimchi.
YUM.
The leftovers made enough for 2 more meals by myself. BURP!
Kiwi liked the sushi rolls. I am very happy about it. The last time he had sushi roll, it was at the Japan-Oriental restaurant on High Street. And one piece of the shrimp tempura roll made his throat clench up, and not in a good way. This time he enjoyed both rolls, and really really liked the spicy scallop rolls. Which was good, because the mayo on the scallop rolls was making MY throat clench up.

Stupid Car
Today I brought my car to NTB to get an oil change, and Kiwi asked me to also have the alignment done, because it was pulling to the left a little.
So later we get a phone call from the manager at NTB, saying that the car needed to be fixed, et cetera, before the alignment can even be done. He quoted that to fix it all up would cost about $2150. Bare minimum would be $800. I don't think so.
So we took the car back (it did get an oil change at least). When monday rolls around, I'm going to call CarMax and check if whatever is needed to be done will be included in our MaxCare warranty program. If not, we'll take it to Kiwi's favourite auto repair shop on Sinclair Road and have them fix it.
BAH.
I've said this many times, and I'll repeat myself again. No more Ford vehicles !!

Less games
I've stopped myself from playing Tribal Wars. I was doing pretty okay, but the game was running so slowly. It seemed that I was spending way too much time on it and not getting much done at all. And I wanted to stop "wasting" time on it.
Universe Wars has pretty much lost its appeal for me, in terms of gameplay. I like the social aspect of it. I met alot of new people online, and had alot of fun chatting. But the "war" part of it got boring.

4th Anniversary + State Fair
It was Kiwi's and my 4th wedding anniversary on Friday.
We woke up in the late morning because Kiwi took the day off to go to an afternoon medical appointment.
First we had lunch. Dim sum at a little chinese place on Olentangy River Road opposite Union Cemetary. It was pretty good food and one of the cheapest dim sum places locally (that we can find).
Next we went to the VA medical center and Kiwi did his thing.
Then we ran some little errands - bank, library, post office.
Finally it was up north to CABS, and home again at 3am Saturday.
******
It usually takes me awhile (3 or more hours) to wind down enough to want to sleep after a CABS session. Kiwi went to sleep almost immediately after reaching home. I got to bed about sunrise. Woke up with this annoying beeping at around 1pm. Our security system malfunctioned. This usually happens once a year.
Puttered around doing chores and et cetera, Kiwi finally woke up about 5.30pm. We played a game - Thurn and Taxis. He ate dinner. We played another game - Vikings. I ate dinner.
Then he watched TV while I did my own thing again.
******
Woke up early-ish Sunday morning. I ate, then I woke Kiwi up and he ate, and we went to the State Fair. $6 ticket for me from Kroger, Kiwi had free entry for the day - veteran's status.
Walked around, looked at stuff. Bought over-priced food. He had a foot long corn dog. We shared a funnel cake topped with apples. We both ate an ear of roasted corn. I thought mine was rather raw still, but it tasted really good dripping with butter. I bought some pretty hair clips, some Avon lip balm, whilst Kiwi bought 2 packages of jerky.
Wallet damage:
ticket 6
corn dog 4.50
funnel cake 5
corn 10
hair clips 5.50
lip balm 5
jerky 36.50
total $72.50
I checked my other blog for my expenditure from last year's fair. It was $32 for fair food. I think we might have spent money on stuff last year, but I guess I neglected to note it down. This time it went up, because we bought STUFF.

Dental Woes
This year, I started taking really good care of my teeth. I would try to brush after every meal (when I was home) and before bed. After each brushing, I would use a fluoride rinse (Act) for preventing cavities once a day, and Crest Pro Health Rinse for the rest of the brushing sessions.
But somehow, my teeth were looking worse and worse. Kiwi started noticing it about 3 months ago. There were brown stains developing at the sides of my teeth near the gums, where apparently my toothbrush could not reach.
I kept on with the brushing and rinsing and flossing, but somehow my teeth were still brown. I finally googled. And found out that people have been complaining about the same problem. Apparently because they've all been using Crest Pro Health.
I am really, really, upset at this. How can this happen? Mouth rinses are supposed to protect your teeth, not make your mouth look like you've been eating shit. I am stopping its use right now. Too bad I actually have a full 1 litre bottle of Crest Pro Health sitting in my bathroom cupboard. I also have a full, unopened tube of Crest Pro Health toothpaste I bought to try after I was done with my current Colgate toothpaste.
I think I will have to throw these out. I can't give it to someone. Then someone else will have ugly teeth. ARGH!

Minda Webber Books
I finished the set of books written by Minda Webber. Currently I'm really into the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Particularly supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves. Her books were kinda blah to me.
Their flavour is more along the lines of light-hearted romance plus puns in a supernatural setting. Too much romance, not enough supernatural. And I loathe puns and tongue-in-cheek references.
I need to find more books that aren't filled with stupid fluffy women melting in a hunky vamp's arms.

No More Trees
I am a treekiller. Actually, we paid people to come in and cut down all the trees on our property.
We had to do this because -
1. The property is small, trees were growing very close to the house.
2. Tree branches were tangling in the power and cable lines. There was a broken branch actually danging off a line.
3. Mini trees were starting to grow in our gutters.
4. There were small trees growing right next to the house, if we did not remove them, they would most likely break through the foundation.
5. There were small trees growing between our chain link fence and the neighbour's wooden privacy fence. If left to themselves, both fences would be damaged, ours would warp and theirs would break.
6. On the other side of the yard, our chain link fence already has wood growing along/into the fence. Totally awful.
We had to hire two companies to do this. The first one did not complete the job properly. But that's another story altogether.
But the second one hired did an outstanding job. I would definitely hire Charter Oaks again if I need them in future. (Probably would have to every year to get them to trim the neighbours' trees along the fence line that grow into our service lines.) The arborist who gave me the estimate was punctual and polite and informative. The tree service team was also punctual, and very courteous and cleaned up after themselves. The old dude who came to grind the stumps did a great job, although he seemed to have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. The lady who was my contact always called me back promptly whenever I left a message.
I am happy that Kiwi should only need to climb up on the roofs one more time this year to clean the roof and gutters. I always worry when he does that. I would gladly hire someone to do it, but he would rip my head off for "wasting" money on something that he can do himself. But if he falls and hurts himself, we'd probably pay 100 times more for medical bills.

Impromptu Fondue
Sunday evening, I was feeling a little munchy even after dinner. So I sliced up some fruits. Strawberries, mangoes, and the last golden kiwi. I arranged things prettily on a plate, took two forks, and brought it down to the basement - Kiwi's computer den.
He really liked the look of it, and then I just said - how about chocolate fondue? Hmm, sounds good.
So we came back upstairs. We peeled about 20 Hershey's Kisses, I added a little milk, and microwaved the concoction in my pyrex measuring cup. Then I stirred it all up into a thick, ooey, gooey chocolatey mess.
Brought out some plain and strawberry marshmallows, and we dug in.
It was good. Really good.
This was my first time making fondue of any sort. I think it was pretty good for a first try without even any proper chocolate sauce recipe. We shall be having it again. Soon, I hope.
YUM!!
He really liked the look of it, and then I just said - how about chocolate fondue? Hmm, sounds good.

Gaming At Home
We had borrowed 2 new (to us) games from the CABS library.
First we played the Ark of the Covenant. It is the first religious game we've played. It's based on the Carcassonne style of game, and we enjoyed it. To be honest, I thought if you changed the pictures a little, and named things differently, it would be called another name but would play exactly the same. It really isn't a religious game at all.
Next we played the card game version of Ticket to Ride. I don't really care for it. I've only played the regular Ticket to Ride once, but the card version is way too complicated. And it involves having a good memory. Maybe other people would enjoy it, but both Kiwi and I have memory issues, so it's not a good game for us. We discussed maybe playing it again, but this time not needing to flip the cards facedown, and changing the gameplay a little. But that would make the game too easy. Hmm, Ticket to Ride card game for juniors, perhaps? Anyway, I was too irritated with the game to want to play it again, even with easier rules.

Long CABS day
Woke up around 8.30am on Saturday, only after 4 hours sleep the night before. We got to CABS around 10am. Picked up a free game - Arkitecton.
Kiwi and I played several games -
Queen's Tower with Nathan and Terry.
Tower of Babel with Terry an Carlo. Quite interesting game.
Super Munchkin with Karin and Steve.
Dragonriders with Karin, Steve, Tim, and Cara. Total waste of time.
Carcassonne the Discovery with Heather, Trent, and Michael.
Eurorails with Michael.
Left just before 3am Sunday.
TIRED !!

Reading list
In the past week, I finished the entire series of the Haunted Bookstore Mysteries by Alice Kimberly. Not really a great achievement, seeing that it was only 4 books. Or was it 5? Well anyway, it's an okay read. Somewhat lighthearted. Absolutely no sex scenes, seeing that the female protagonist is still sexually inhibited and prissy.
Maybe she will lighten up in the future. Who knows? She just admitted (in the last current book) that the kiss shared with the ghost was pretty good. What a breakthrough!!
I also finished the latest book in the Odd series by Dean Koontz. I wish there were more Odd Thomas books. I think he's a pretty interested character.

Toys for the Kits
After dinner at Mozart's on Saturday, we walked to the nearby PetPeople store, and bought some toys for the kits. Just because 7 or 8 toys scattered across the living room floor just wasn't enough.
Kiwi picked out 2 largish catnip balls, and 1 catnip sock. I found something interesting, it's called a paw-breaker. A very hard sphere of compressed catnip. It does smell very strong.
So far, the most popular new toy was the sock. Bebe liked to clutch at it and kick it and lick it. He was so into it, he fell off the table while wrestling in it. And ripped up my one and only table cloth.
The squishy nip balls were ignored, and the pawbreaker is missing. We shall continue to monitor the situation.

Weekend Summary
On friday evening, Kiwi managed to come home somewhat earlier than normal. He took a shower, we went for a quick dinner at China Buffet near Hudson and High. We got to CABS somewhere before 9pm. There were still some games left for the give-away, but only 1 choice left. So we took it. Women and Men. Uh, okay then.
We were supposed to meet 2 friends of ours. We were somewhat surprised to see that they weren't there yet. But oh well. We started playing a new game with Michael and two others (I forget their names), called Fury of Dracula.
About 3 turns in, our friends arrived. So we had to abandon our current game (so sorry! ) and hang out with them. I taught them how to play Carcassonne. After 1 game, they were very tired, and left.
So we grouped up with Nathan and JB to play Tinner's Trail. Then we played Garden Competition with Nathan and Jeff.
By this time, it was 3am Saturday morning. We just went home and slept.
Saturday afternoon, we went out grocery shopping. We bought lots of fruit!! Mangoes,, plums, peaches, pluots, golden kiwis, and yellow tomatoes. Fruit makes me happy. Mangoes make me very happy!! :)
We also had a very early dinner at Mozart's Cafe near Weber and High. The baked emmanthaler appetizer was AWESOME!!! I had schnitzel and spaetzel, and Kiwi ordered pork and sauerkraut. After getting home, I started fixing cabbage rolls.
This is my first time doing this dish. And I ran out of cabbage using only 1/3 of the meat/rice mixture. Anyway, just dumped the rolls and tomatoes and sauce in the crockpot, and put the extra stuff in the fridge.
Kiwi and I started playing these 2 new games we borrowed from the CABS library. Aquadukt was just "okay" only. It's a 50% chance and 50% logic game. Not too bad, but not as good as Carcassonne. The other game, Dungeon Twister, was totally lame. I suppose for myself, if I wanted to play an RPG type game with characters, I like it on the playstation or on the computer. I'm too impatient to fuss around with dice rolls, or board games.
After we were done with the games, we were both hungry. We finished the entire pot of cabbage rolls. The only thing left was the sauce. That's an entire head of cabbage between us! Kiwi wanted more, so I promised him that I'd go out on Sunday to buy more cabbage and fix more cabbage rolls for him.
So Sunday afternoon comes along, and we wake up. After a light breakfast? lunch? meal, we went to Aldis to pick up 2 heads of cabbage, and some other groceries. So while Kiwi was mowing the lawn, I prepared twice the amount and used up all the meat.
There was leftover cabbage, so I threw that in a saucepan with some turkey stock, and I also had some leftover turkey meatball soup, and it was pretty good. For me anyway. Kiwi apparently is not a fan of cabbage unless it's cabbage rolls and sauerkraut.
We played India Rails, and after that long, intensive game, it was time to chow down on cabbage rolls part two. Kiwi had a whole plateful of cabbage rolls. I had about 3, together with some garlic toast, and some turkey cabbage soup.

Weekend
We woke up late Saturday morning, and went out for an Indian lunch buffet at Amul India on Sawmill Road, north of Hard Road. It was a new place for us, and we initially turned into the wrong parking lot, and discovered the Hoggy's restaurant on Sawmill !!!
The food wasn't terribly great, but it was not awful. Kiwi preferred this restaurant as compared to the other one we had last week, or was it the week before that. But I think I liked the other one much better. The other one had more variety of meats - goat curry and chicken curries. And garlic naan !! But he likes this one better, sid that his stomach did not make any protests against this one.
Personally, I found it rather bland. And the chicken curries were made with sliced white meat. Way too dry. Bleaugh.
After lunch, we drove to Dayton to visit Kiwi's dad. Kiwi-dad's girlfriend brought her 15 year old dog to come live with them, and I really enjoyed hanging out with her. I think I like dogs that are a little older, not puppies. Older dogs are much more laid back. So Penny the chihuahua and dachschund mix was my little girlfriend for the day. She was so sweet. Kept demanding scritches from myself and kiwi-dad-gf.
We went for dinner with them at a local greasy spoon. Yuck, I'd never want to go back to the Hasty Tasty Pancake house ever again. I have nothing against greasy spoons, but the food was really awful. Only thing that was decent was the garlic toast.
When we finally got back to Columbus, it was about 1.30am sunday morning. After cleaning up, we played a game of Eurorails. Then went to bed.
Woke up late late late, went out to Linens and Things to get some stuff, then dinner at Hoggys at Polaris. It was excellent food as usual.

Books
Part of the reason why this blog was created, was to record the books that I have been reading. However, I find myself reading more than I have blogged. Which is okay. Just defeats one of the purposes of this blog.
Anyway, it's still my blog, and I get to say what goes or does not go in it.
Anyway, one of the books I finished this week was "From Dead To Worse", the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. I really enjoyed this series alot. I just wish there was more of it to read. I can't wait to find out what happens next!
Another book was "Undead & Unworthy", the latest Undead novel by MaryJanice Davidson. Ditto on the feelings.
Still trudging on with the Nightside series by Simon R. Green. I am starting to develop a liking for the protagonist John Taylor. But I got so irritated in the first 3 books about all these stupid cryptic hints about who his mother was, I googled it and thus felt much better.

Saving electricity - clothes rack
I have always been wanting to hang-dry the laundry. Kiwi has always been against it. My thing is to save money on electricity, and his thing is that hanging clothes outside to dry makes the clothing stink like the city.
Personally I don't find this city or even this neighbourhood very polluted at all. But I suppose he has "standards" because if his clothes are hung outdoors, it's supposed to smell like the country. Eh, whatever.
So our compromise is to dry the clothing inside the house. Which took me about a week of walking around the various local stores, and looking online, before finding a drying rack that I'm used to using back when I was in Singapore.
I finally had to order it online. The 65 feet Eagle Clothes Drying Rack. Argh, so expensive. But I should recoup the investment eventually.
When it was delivered, Kiwi sneered at it. He said it looks flimsy, and not big enough. I'm not sure what he had in mind, but I'm the one doing the laundry, so I get to pick! *I* like it. It's exactly what I used to have, except for the colour.
It is now set up in the pantry area, right next to an air vent, in front of the glass brick windows. I think that's the best area (in terms of air-flow and sun) but rather unsightly. But I don't want to be hanging it in the dark, enclosed basement laundry area. EW.
There's a full load of whites hanging on it right now. And when I say full, I mean it was a load that filled up the washing machine. Eight bath towels, some kitchen towels, and a whole week's worth of Kiwi's whites - undershirts, assorted t-shirts, whitey-tighties and socks.
After hanging the whites, I actually called Kiwi at work, and told him what I did, plus there was still room to spare on the rack. He sounded reluctantly impressed. But said he'd have to come home and look at how I did it. He knew it was a large load of clothes. He had carried the dirty laundry down to the basement last night for me.
Anyway, I'm so boring. Going on and on about laundry.

Cat Vaccinations
I brought the 3 furry kids to CWA on wednesday, to get vaccinated during Dr Erin's spay/neuter clinic. $30 for everyone for rabies and distemper. Next I will have to take them to Petco to get a shot for FIV.
Princella was a totally vicious bitch. Gave me two good scratches on the hands. The other two boys were totally wonderful and well behaved, they didn't even flinch when the needles went in. I love my boys.

Long Weekend
On friday, we had a late lunch and went to CABS. We met 2 new people, we played a bunch of games. Carcassonne, Tricky Town, Eco-Fluxx, Wits and Wagers, and Liar's Dice.
The club closed unusually early at midnight, so we borrowed two games and went home to play Starship Catan. I won!
*****
Saturday, we woke up late-ish, and went to Schmidt's Sausage Haus, and met with 2 new friends I met online a few years back. Spent a whole lot of time chatting, and later the four of us went to Denise's Ice Cream to eat ice cream (obviously) and play Fluxx and chat some more.
I ordered coffee oreo, my kiwi ordered banana, and buttered sweet corn. They all tasted good.
After we went home around midnight, the two of us played Carcassonne The City (I won), and a rematch of Starship Catan. Kiwi won this time.
*****
Sunday was a day of lazing around at home. We played Empire Builder original.

Spaghetti
I made spaghetti.
Well, kinda sorta.
The pasta is from dried, tri-colour rotini.
The sauce is from a jar, with all sorts of stuff added in it. Ground beef, onions, olives, mushrooms, spinach, grape tomatoes.
I did not use any seasoning, except for oil and salt in the water for the pasta.
YUM!

Books by Simon. R Green
I'm trying out a new author. "Something From The Nightside" is the second book of his that I'm reading. I'm a little bored by it. Or rather, I find my thoughts wandering whilst reading. I get up to do things whilst reading. I'd rather mess around on the computer than read it right now.
This does not bode well for the other 8 or so books of his I borrowed from the library. We'll see what happens.

current events in the house
I am sitting cross legged at the edge of the bed, typing this on the laptop. Bebe is sprawled out on the blanket over my legs, pretending to be dead. There is a book, face down beside me. I got somewhat bored reading it.
Right now, my online games of interest are Tribal Wars (just started playing about 2 weeks ago) and Universe Wars.
Feeling a little lonely, because my kiwi is not back from work yet.
Tomorrow will be the 4th of July. We're not going out to a BBQ, nor fireworks show. Instead, we will be at CABS. All day, as soon as we wake up and eat something.
